The Story Behind Wildfolk

Hi, I’m Phoenix.

Wherever I’ve called home, wild neighbors have been my welcoming committee.

My kin. This is where the name Wildfolk emerged.

In particular, I am drawn to the ones who are often labeled nuisances, undesirable, maligned and misunderstood. I understand what this feels like, at least as a human being. It’s my desire to be a good neighbor, a thoughtful steward, a wonder seeker and a kind observer.

I take inspiration from many of the wild creatures in Brooklyn and around the city, hoping in turn to inspire a fresh perspective, appreciation, whimsy and joy through my art

The Art of Making

Every piece begins with noticing someone in the “wild.” A picture is taken, which becomes the basis of a drawing. Drawings may start with paper and pencil or they may come to life on a digital canvas. Each drawing represents a real-life wild neighbor with their own personality, and a relationship between us.

Meet Nimbus (a.k.a., Bumble to others). This legendary fellow resides in Prospect Park. A truly magical being.

Meet Palooza. The feathered Jane Fonda of the neighborhood flock.

Meet Baggins. The park raccoon chillin’ in the grill on a wintry day.
